Q&A: Natural Beaded Rows Hair Extensions

Natural Beaded Rows Hair Extensions Facts - Chasing Cinderella

The day has finally come! I got hair extensions! This is my first time having extensions (besides clip ins) so I had so many questions! I figured it I had all these questions, I'm sure y'all did too! So I thought it would be best to do a whole blog post so it can be referenced whenever it is needed! So here you go!

Everything You Need To Know About NBR Hair Extensions

I've always wanted to try extensions to add some thickness to my hair, and I really wanted more hair for wedding to play with! Extensions are not just for adding length, but for thickness! I would say my hair is pretty average thickness, and I have pretty long hair as it is. Extensions are not just for those with short hair!

WHAT TYPE OF EXTENSIONS DO YOU HAVE?

I have Natural Beaded Rows hair extensions, also known as NBR extensions! The hair extensions are put into your hair in rows by creating a "track" with a super cool bead and string technique! The extensions are then placed on the track and sewn in!

HOW LONG ARE YOUR EXTENSIONS?

I have one and a half rows of 22" extensions!

WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR EXTENSIONS DONE?

I had the pleasure of getting my extensions done by Mae Simmons at Gibson Hair and Makeup in downtown Charleston! Check out Mae's Instagram here.

CAN YOU WEAR YOUR HAIR UP WITH THE EXTENSIONS?

Yes you can!! You can wear your hair basically any way you want to! Because of the way the extensions are attached to your hair, then are hidden! I wear my hair up pretty much every day!

DO NBR EXTENSIONS HURT?

This will probably be different for everyone, but for me, no they did not! The first few days your hair will feel a bit tight- it will feel like you are wearing a headband. After they loosen a bit you don't even realize they are there! The first two nights sleeping was a bit odd because it didn't feel great to lay on them, so I kind of slept on my side/face so I wasn't laying on them. But now I sleep like a normal person!

Oh, and the installation process doesn't hurt at all!

DO NBR EXTENSIONS DAMAGE YOUR HAIR?

NBR Extensions are supposed to be the least damaging extensions, besides clip in extensions! You will always have some natural breakage with extensions, but NBRs have proven to be the least damaging because they have the least amount of contact points on your head! Basically because they are attached with a small number of beads, there are not many areas to cause damage! Other extensions have more contact with your hair, which leads to more damage!

I will keep you posted on any damage I may receive!

HOW LONG DO NBR EXTENSIONS LAST?

You have to have your extensions tightened (or moved up) every 6-8 weeks, depending on how quickly your natural hair grows! The extension hair lasts around 6-8 months, depending on how well you take care of it.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO INSTALL NBR EXTENSIONS?

The installation process takes an average of two to three hours! I didn't have to color match the extensions, so I'd say my appointment was on the shorter side, but if you need to color and/or cut the hair, it will take a bit longer.

HOW MUCH DO NBR EXTENSIONS COST?

I'll start off my saying that Natural Beaded Rows are definitely an investment! The price will differ depending on what salon you go to, but I'd say they are all relatively the same. Your first appointment will be the most expensive because you have to pay for the actual hair, plus the styling fees. But after that you will only have to pay for the styling fees (when you get the extensions moved up, etc). Length and thickness play factors in the price!

Like I said above, I didn't have to dye my extensions, and I also didn't do much styling besides a little bit of cutting. The more styling you have done, the more expensive.

WHAT IS THE WASHING AND DRYING PROCESS LIKE?

This was the part of getting extensions that I was most nervous about! I am not a fan of self maintain: I wash my hair about once a week, and usually run the hairdryer on it for about five minutes before letting it air-dry the rest of the way! To my pleasant surprise, washing and drying my extensions didn't add too much more time to my routine! It obviously takes a bit longer to wash and dry because you have more hair, but it honestly only added maybe 20 minutes to my usual routine! This will obviously differ per person, and the length and thickness of your extensions.

When you wash your hair, you want to make sure the shampoo gets to your roots and around the extensions! You also want to make sure you get all of the shampoo out of your roots. Since you have more hair now, you'll want to pay attention the first few showers until it just comes natural to you.

When drying your hair, you want to make sure that your roots are throughly dry. I usually get my roots dry and then let the rest of my hair air-dry!

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR EXTENSIONS?

The best part of these extensions is how much longer you will be able to go without washing your hair! Since the extensions don't have any oils, they will absorb some of your natural oils from your head! It depends on your natural hair, but you should try to wash them less than you would normally wash your hair! I have trained my natural hair to only have to be washed once a week, so thats how often I plan to wash my extensions, but I know that isn't the case for everyone! Just like your natural hair, it is healthier not to wash them every day!

CAN YOU PUT HEAT ON NBR EXTENSIONS?

Yes you can! They are made out of real human hair so you can treat them just like your own hair! Just like your own hair, the more heat you apply, the more damaged them will become. It is suggested not to over-heat your hair, and always use a heat protectant!

WHAT IS THE UPKEEP LIKE FOR NBR EXTENSIONS?

Like I mentioned above, you will have to get them tightened ever 6-8 weeks. You can wash, dry, brush and style your hair pretty much the exact same way as you would without extensions! Washing does take a little more precision to get the roots clean, but nothing too crazy! Mae recommended putting oil in your hair and to use high quality proudest since your extensions don't receive all the natural oils as your real hair does! The better you take care of your extensions, the longer they will last!

Woo that was a lot, but there you go! I will keep you all posted on my experience, and will keep this post as up to date as possible! If you have any more questions, please ask! If you have NBR extensions, or plan on getting them, I would love to hear your experience with them!

Thanks so much for reading! xo
